A print of John Singer Sargent's Villa Giulia — a watercolour study of the 16th century Roman villa by one of the great painters of the Belle Époque, treated in the loose, luminous wash that defined Sargent's late work.
The Villa Giulia was built on the northern edge of Rome between 1551 and 1555 as the summer retreat of Pope Julius III, to designs by Vignola, Ammannati and Vasari with advice from Michelangelo. Its sunken nymphaeum — a three-tiered courtyard of stairs, fountains and grotto — is one of the great inventions of late Renaissance architecture, and was an obvious magnet for a painter who travelled through Italy looking less for set-pieces than for the architecture of courtyards, stairs and water.
John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was the defining portrait painter of the late-Victorian and Edwardian era and, in his later years, a restless and brilliant watercolourist. His travelling watercolours through Italy, Spain, the Alps and the Middle East are the most relaxed and painterly body of work of his career.
