A black and white print of the Diana of Versailles (Diane chasseresse) — the most famous surviving statue of Artemis the Huntress, now in the Louvre. The marble is a Roman copy of the 1st or 2nd century AD, taken from a lost bronze attributed to the Athenian sculptor Leochares around 325 BC.
Artemis strides forward with a hound at her side, her right hand reaching back over her shoulder for an arrow from her quiver. She is goddess of the hunt, of the moon, of wild places and of childbirth — twin sister to Apollo, and a figure Greek sculpture kept returning to. The pose here is not a static presentation but an instant of motion, arrested mid-step.
The sculpture takes its modern name from the gardens of the Palace of Versailles, where Louis XIV installed it after it was given to him. In black and white, the dynamism of the figure reads with particular clarity — the diagonal of the chiton, the forward line of the leg, the echo of shoulder and hand.
