A print of Delos — the small, dry island at the centre of the Cyclades that was, in Greek religion, the most sacred place in the Aegean, the birthplace of Apollo and of his twin sister Artemis.

The myth: Leto, pregnant by Zeus, was driven from land to land by the jealous Hera, who had forbidden any "firm ground" from taking her in to give birth. Poseidon raised Delos out of the sea as a floating island — neither firm nor fixed — and Leto came ashore there, laboured nine days beneath a single palm tree, and brought forth first Artemis and then Apollo. From that moment Delos was sacred; by the archaic period it was the site of one of the greatest Panhellenic festivals; under Athens in the 5th century it housed the treasury of the Delian League; and in the Hellenistic and Roman periods it was a free port of extraordinary commercial density. Today the whole island is an open-air archaeological site.

The ruins of Delos — the Terrace of the Lions, the agoras, the theatre, the columned house courts — have been a subject of European travel-illustration and photography from the 18th century onward.
