A black and white close-up of Michelangelo's David (1501–1504), focusing on his right hand holding the sling stones at his hip. The grip is loose, almost casual — yet alert. This is David before the battle with Goliath, not after. Michelangelo broke with every earlier Florentine depiction of the subject by choosing the moment of resolve instead of the moment of triumph.

The hand itself is the most-discussed detail of the sculpture. It is deliberately oversized, disproportionate to the rest of the body. Art historians have long read this as an evocation of the biblical epithet manu fortis — "strong of hand" — and as a compositional response to the statue's original intended placement high on Florence Cathedral, where foreshortening from below would have brought the hand into scale. When the statue was instead installed at ground level in the Piazza della Signoria in 1504, the "flaw" became one of the work's most iconic features.

This print isolates that right hand. In black and white, the veins across the back of the hand and the tension held in the fingers read with unusual clarity — the Carrara marble's surface reduces to pure form and tonal contrast, letting the carving itself do the talking. Now housed in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, the David remains the defining sculpture of the High Renaissance and a civic symbol of the Florentine Republic.

Alternative angles of this statue: David (Right Hand 2), David (Left Hand), and David (Rear).
