A black and white close-up of the left hand of Michelangelo's David (1501–1504), holding the sling across the shoulder in the moments before the fight with Goliath. The grip is deliberate, the wrist turned — the tension of readiness, not the release of action. Michelangelo chose the interval before the battle rather than the aftermath, a break with every earlier Florentine treatment of the David subject.
Seen alongside its counterpart — the right hand loosely holding the stones at David's hip — the asymmetry of the two hands tells the psychological story of the statue. One hand steady, one hand poised. One hand a tool, the other a weapon. Between them, the whole figure is held in equilibrium.
The statue was carved from a single block of Carrara marble and is now housed in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence. In black and white, the sculpture reduces to form and tonal contrast — the clearest possible reading of Michelangelo's carving.
