A black and white print of Antonio Canova's Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss (1787–1793) — the most famous Neoclassical sculpture of the 18th century, and the work that made Canova the defining European sculptor of his generation. Cupid lifts the unconscious Psyche from her enchanted sleep; her arms curl upward to his neck in the instant before their lips meet.
The story comes from Apuleius' Metamorphoses: Psyche, set an impossible task by Venus, opened a forbidden box and fell into a death-like sleep. Cupid finds her, wakes her with his kiss, and carries her to Olympus to be made immortal. Canova held the figures at the moment just before the kiss — the tension, not the release — and composed them as a wide X that opens outward for the viewer from every side.
The marble was commissioned in 1787 by the British Colonel John Campbell and later acquired by Joachim Murat; it has hung in the Louvre since 1824. In black and white, the transparency of Canova's carving — wings that seem to hover, arms that seem weightless — reads as pure form and light.
