A black and white print of the Capitoline Wolf (Lupa Capitolina) — the bronze she-wolf who, in Roman foundation myth, suckled the abandoned twins Romulus and Remus and raised them to adulthood. The sculpture has been the emblem of Rome itself for more than half a millennium; it stands today in the Capitoline Museums, atop the hill it names.
The wolf was traditionally dated to the 5th century BC and attributed to Etruscan craftsmen — a dating followed since antiquity. Modern scientific analysis has complicated that picture, with radiocarbon evidence suggesting a possible medieval casting. The twins themselves are a separate, later addition, made in the 15th century and generally attributed to the Florentine sculptor Antonio del Pollaiolo.
Whatever its date of casting, the wolf's snarl, her ribcage, and her vigilance over the children beneath her have fixed the mythical image of Rome's founding in Western imagination. This print renders the bronze in monochrome to bring the surface and the sculpture's form forward.
