A print of a Bronze Pegasus — the winged horse of Greek mythology, caught mid-flight in cast bronze of the kind produced from the classical Greek period through the Renaissance and the Neoclassical revival.
Pegasus was born from the blood of the gorgon Medusa at the moment Perseus severed her head — immortal, pure white, and winged. He was tamed with a golden bridle given by Athena to the Corinthian hero Bellerophon, who rode him against the Chimera; later, when Bellerophon grew too proud and tried to ride up to Olympus, Zeus sent a gadfly that stung the horse and threw the rider off. Pegasus continued up and became a constellation. One of his hoof-strikes is said to have opened the spring of Hippocrene on Mount Helicon, source of poetic inspiration — the reason he became the winged horse of the Muses and, by extension, the emblem of poetry itself.
The winged horse has been a working emblem in Western art since archaic Greek coinage, from Corinth's stater onward.
