A print of Richard Roland Holst's Birth of Venus — the Dutch Symbolist's rendering of one of the oldest Greek mythological subjects, the goddess Aphrodite rising from the foam of the sea at her birth.
Venus's birth comes, in the oldest version of the myth, from the violent act that opens Hesiod's Theogony: Cronus castrates his father Uranus and flings the severed flesh into the sea, and from the foam that gathers around it the goddess of love rises fully grown. Botticelli's Renaissance Birth of Venus set the template for every later Western treatment of the subject — the shell, the wind, the attendant nymphs — and Symbolist printmakers across Europe returned to it as a touchstone.
Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst (1868–1938) was a central figure of Dutch Symbolism and Jugendstil — a lithographer, muralist, stained-glass designer and teacher whose work shaped Dutch decorative art around the turn of the 20th century. His mythological prints treat classical figures as flat, heraldic presences rather than naturalistic bodies.
