A print of Walter Crane's Bellerophon Riding Pegasus — an illustration from Nathaniel Hawthorne's A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys (Houghton Mifflin, 1892), in which the mortal hero takes to the sky on the back of the winged horse for the first time. Bellerophon rises above the cliffs, reins in his hand, Pegasus stretched into a full glide.
In Greek myth, Pegasus was born from the blood of Medusa when Perseus struck off her head. Bellerophon tamed the wild horse with a bridle given to him by Athena, flew him into combat with the Chimera and, in some late versions of the myth, eventually tried to ride him to Olympus — a hubris Zeus punished by throwing the rider to the earth. Crane's plate holds the story at its moment of soaring, before the fall.
Walter Crane (1845–1915) was the foremost decorative illustrator of Victorian England and a leading figure in the Arts & Crafts movement. His Hawthorne illustrations remain among the most familiar images of Greek myth in English children's literature. Other Bellerophon plates: The Fountain and The Chimera.
