A print of John Singer Sargent's Bacchus — a watercolour after classical sculpture by one of the great portrait painters of the Belle Époque, treating the Roman god of wine in the loose, luminous wash that defined Sargent's late work.
Bacchus — Dionysus in the Greek — is the god of wine, ritual madness, theatre and the vine, the counter-principle to his brother Apollo's ordered beauty. Classical sculptures of the god, from Hellenistic marbles onward, typically show him as a soft-bodied, almost androgynous youth crowned with vine leaves, ivy or grapes, often accompanied by a panther or a satyr. The type remained a reference point for European sculpture and painting well into the 20th century.
John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was the defining portrait painter of the late-Victorian and Edwardian era and, in his later years, a restless and brilliant watercolourist. Travelling through Italy, Spain, the Alps and the Middle East, he produced hundreds of watercolours of architecture, gardens, sculpture and light — the most relaxed and painterly body of work of his career.
