A print of an Artemis fresco in the tradition of the Roman wall paintings recovered from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Artemis — Diana in Roman cult, goddess of the hunt, the moon, and the wilderness — is rendered in her conventional Pompeiian attributes: short tunic, quiver at the shoulder, bow in hand, her hounds nearby.
Artemis was one of the most popular female deities in Roman domestic painting. She appears both in narrative scenes — punishing Actaeon, hunting the Calydonian boar, meeting Endymion — and in the simpler frontal portrait mode, as a household emblem of the wild and of young unmarried womanhood. The Pompeiian wall-painters leaned toward a quick, confident Hellenistic line rather than the hieratic stiffness of earlier Roman religious art.
The finest surviving Pompeiian frescoes of Diana/Artemis hang today at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli. In print, the Pompeii red ground and the elegant freehand drawing of the figure come forward — a study of the wall-painter's craft as much as of the goddess.
