A minimalist single-line drawing of Ares, the Greek god of war. The whole figure is carried in a single continuous line — helmet, profile, the grip of a spear.
Ares was the son of Zeus and Hera, and the one Olympian Zeus is said to have openly disliked — a god of the chaotic, bloody, brute side of warfare rather than its strategic discipline, which belonged to Athena. In Greek myth he was often humiliated: trapped in a net by Hephaestus with his lover Aphrodite, wounded by the mortal Diomedes at Troy, scolded by his own father on Olympus. Rome recast him as Mars, father of Romulus and the ancestral deity of the Roman people — a far grander figure than the Greek original.
