A print of Arcadia — the pastoral ideal of Greek mythology, a mountainous region of the central Peloponnese that became, in Greek and later European literature, the imagined homeland of the pastoral life.

The real Arcadia was a remote inland country of shepherds and herdsmen, held to be so old that the Arcadians claimed to predate the moon itself. Its patron god was Pan, half-goat, playing the reed pipes; the nymphs and muses haunted its springs; the shepherd's life there was, in the Greek imagination, the life that men lived when the gods still walked the earth. Virgil's Eclogues and Theocritus' Idylls turned this Arcadia into the pastoral mode of European poetry; the Renaissance picked it up through Sannazaro and Sidney; and by the 17th century Nicolas Poussin was painting the tomb in the meadow with its shepherds and its famous inscription, Et in Arcadia ego — "Even in Arcadia, there am I," where the speaker is death.

Arcadia has since run as a continuous thread through European painting and poetry: a place that stands for the life of the world before work, before the cities, before the fall.
