A black and white print of the Apoxyomenos, the "Scraper" — an athlete using a strigil to clean oil, sweat and dust from his forearm after competition. The original was a bronze by Lysippos of Sicyon, court sculptor to Alexander the Great, cast around 330 BC. The pose is casual, self-contained, turned inward: a break with the frontal heroic poses of the earlier Greek canon.
Lysippos is credited in antiquity with introducing a new set of bodily proportions — smaller head, longer limbs, taller figure — that became the standard for the Hellenistic period. The Apoxyomenos is his most famous surviving subject, best known from a Roman marble copy in the Vatican Museums and a rare intact bronze, the Croatian Apoxyomenos, recovered from the Adriatic seabed in 1996.
In black and white, the balance Lysippos built into the figure reads most clearly — the weight on the right leg, the strigil held forward almost into the viewer's space, the gaze cast down in concentration. Part of the Light & Shadow collection of classical sculpture photography.
