A print of Aphrodite rising from the sea — one of the oldest and most-painted subjects of Greek mythology, the birth of the goddess of love from the foam of the ocean.
The story is told in its earliest form in Hesiod's Theogony: Cronus, in overthrowing his father Uranus, cuts off Uranus's genitals and flings them into the sea; from the foam (aphros) that gathers around the flesh, Aphrodite is born fully grown and steps ashore on the island of Cyprus. The myth reads the goddess as a literal embodiment of the meeting of sky and sea — violence and procreation, wound and birth, held together in a single image.
Botticelli's Renaissance Birth of Venus set the template for every later Western painting of the subject, drawing Aphrodite upright on her scallop shell with her long red-gold hair unbound. The pose has been endlessly adapted since — from the Pompeiian wall-painters who preceded Botticelli by fifteen hundred years to the Neoclassical, Symbolist and Art Nouveau revivals that followed.
