A black and white print of Alfred Gilbert's Anteros (1893) — the winged archer that crowns the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain in London's Piccadilly Circus. The figure is commonly, and incorrectly, called "Eros"; Gilbert himself intended it as Anteros, the Greek god of selfless, requited love, the elder and more serious twin of Eros.

The sculpture was commissioned as a memorial to the Victorian philanthropist Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, whose life's work was welfare reform for the poor. Gilbert argued that only Anteros — the deity of charitable, returned love — was an appropriate figure for a monument to Shaftesbury's philanthropy. The choice was lost on the public almost immediately; the winged archer of Piccadilly Circus has been "Eros" in London parlance ever since.

Gilbert cast the figure in aluminium — one of the earliest monumental public sculptures to use the then-novel metal, whose silvery surface was meant to give the winged god a supernatural lightness. The archer balances on one foot, bow raised, the arrow notionally loosed. In black and white, the thin reflective surface of the aluminium and the balletic pose come forward as pure line and form.
