The full composition of Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Abduction of Proserpina (Ratto di Proserpina, 1621–1622). The young Bernini — only 23 when he completed it — compressed an entire scene of violence, terror and motion into a single spiralling block of white marble, now displayed at the Galleria Borghese in Rome.

The subject is the abduction of Proserpina (Persephone in Greek mythology) by Pluto, god of the underworld. Proserpina twists backward, her body stretched in resistance; Pluto strides forward, lifting her from the mortal world toward his realm below. The sculpture's concetto — its governing idea — is torsion: every limb of the composition spirals, giving the marble a sense of rotation that rewards walking around the statue in person.

This photograph captures that full turning form, flattened only by the black and white treatment that isolates the carving from distraction. It is a defining work of the Italian Baroque, and one of the most influential sculptures in Western art.

Alternative angles of this statue: Proserpina 1 (hand detail), and Proserpina 2 (alternate detail). Part of the Light & Shadow collection.
