A black and white print of the Arch of Septimius Severus in the Roman Forum — the triumphal arch erected in 203 AD to commemorate the Emperor's victories over the Parthian Empire and his settlement of the eastern frontier. Three bays rise over the Sacred Way at the north-west corner of the Forum, the reliefs above each passage narrating episodes from the campaigns of 194–195 and 197–199.

Severus co-ruled with his two sons, Caracalla and Geta, and the arch was originally dedicated to all three. After Severus' death in 211, Caracalla had Geta murdered and his memory formally damned (damnatio memoriae); Geta's name was chiselled out of the dedicatory inscription, and the traces of the erasure are still visible in the stonework above the central bay today. It is one of the most famous physical records of Roman political violence that ancient monuments preserve.

The reliefs themselves are unusually dense and narrative — closer in spirit to the continuous-scroll storytelling of Trajan's Column than to the discrete scenic panels of earlier triumphal arches. In black and white, the carved detail and the weight of the marble come forward without the distraction of modern traffic behind it.
