A black and white print of Antonio Canova's Mars — a Neoclassical marble of the Roman god of war, rendered in the heroic nudity and idealised proportion Canova drew from the surviving canon of Greek and Hellenistic sculpture.

Canova returned to Mars repeatedly in his career. The most celebrated version is the over-life-size colossus Napoleon as Mars the Peacemaker (1802–1806), commissioned by the Emperor and now in the stairwell of Apsley House, London; a companion bronze stands in the courtyard of the Brera in Milan. In each version, Canova set the god's powerful torso on a contrapposto that trades the aggressive readiness of antique war-gods for a calmer, more Olympian stance — Mars not as warrior, but as the figure who has laid war down.

This was the political logic of Napoleonic Neoclassicism: the Emperor as the bringer of order, the martial body held in studied repose. In black and white, the sculpture's polished marble surface and the careful balance of its pose read most cleanly.
