A black and white close-up of Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Medusa (c. 1640), a marble bust held in the Capitoline Museums in Rome. Where almost every earlier treatment of the Gorgon shows her after her death — her severed head held aloft by Perseus — Bernini's Medusa is alive. She is caught in the instant of her transformation: her serpents writhing from her hair, her eyes downcast, her mouth open in what reads as horror or grief.

In Greek mythology, Medusa was a mortal priestess transformed into a Gorgon as punishment, her gaze turned to a weapon that petrified anyone who looked on her. Bernini's bust strips the horror of the myth down to its most human register: the moment of realisation. It is a Baroque masterpiece, and one of Bernini's most psychologically unsettling works.

This photograph isolates the face and upper serpents. In black and white, the Carrara marble resolves to pure form and tonal contrast — the tension in the mouth, the shadow under the eye, the coil of snake against hair.
