A black and white print of Emperor Hadrian, who ruled the Roman Empire from 117 to 138 AD. Born in Italica in Roman Spain, he was the third of the "Five Good Emperors" and is remembered as a ruler of unusual intellect — a philhellene, an architect, a poet, and a tireless traveller who spent much of his reign moving through the provinces of his empire.

Hadrian's reign left physical marks still visible today: the rebuilding of the Pantheon in Rome, the great frontier wall across Britain that bears his name, the sprawling Villa Adriana at Tivoli, and the lost city of Antinoopolis in Egypt founded in memory of his lover Antinous. He was also the first Roman emperor to wear a beard in his official portraits — a break with the clean-shaven Julio-Claudian tradition that set the fashion for the next two centuries.

The bust type — bearded, curly-haired, with the long straight nose of the official image — survives in dozens of museum collections across the former empire. In black and white, the carved marble reduces to form and contour.
