A print of the Theatre of Aspendos — one of the best-preserved Roman theatres anywhere in the ancient world, built in the 2nd century AD in the Pamphylian city of Aspendos in what is now southern Turkey.

Aspendos was a prosperous Roman provincial city near the Eurymedon river; the theatre, built under Marcus Aurelius by the architect Zenon on designs that followed Vitruvius's principles, holds an audience of around seven thousand in a semicircular cavea facing a scaenae frons — the architectural stage backdrop — that survives with extraordinary completeness. The stage wall still has its niches, its blind windows, its two stories of columns and pilasters; the diazoma, the radial stairs, the vomitoria and the galleries are all there. For acoustics it is still regarded as one of the best Roman theatres extant, and it has been used for performances more or less continuously from antiquity to the present.

Aspendos was a standard subject of 19th century travel illustration and early archaeological photography, from the Ottoman period onward.
