A black and white print of the exterior of the Pantheon in Rome — the best-preserved building of Roman antiquity and, since 609 AD, the church of Santa Maria ad Martyres. The Corinthian portico opens onto the Piazza della Rotonda; behind it rises the circular brick-and-concrete drum that holds the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built.

The building was commissioned by the Emperor Hadrian and completed between roughly 118 and 128 AD, replacing an earlier temple put up by Marcus Agrippa in 27 BC and destroyed twice by fire. Hadrian retained Agrippa's original dedicatory inscription — M·AGRIPPA·L·F·COS·TERTIVM·FECIT, "Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, consul for the third time, built this" — and the line has misled casual viewers about the building's age for nineteen centuries.

The Pantheon survived the fall of the Western Empire because it was consecrated as a church early — a fate that also preserved the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. Raphael, Victor Emmanuel II, and Umberto I are among those buried inside. In black and white, the classical geometry of the portico and the weight of the drum come forward without the distraction of modern Roman colour.
