A print of J.C. Leyendecker's Hermes — the German-American illustrator's rendering of the Greek messenger god, rendered in the clean, classicised figure style that defined American commercial illustration in the first quarter of the 20th century.

Hermes was the messenger of the Olympian gods, patron of travellers, merchants, heralds and thieves, and the Psychopompos who led the souls of the newly dead to the underworld. His attributes — winged sandals, winged petasos, the twin-serpent caduceus — made him one of the most iconographically recognisable figures of the Greek pantheon, and a natural subject for modern commercial illustration.

Joseph Christian Leyendecker (1874–1951) was, with Norman Rockwell, one of the two defining cover artists of the golden age of American magazine illustration. He produced over 300 covers for the Saturday Evening Post, along with extensive commercial work — the Arrow Collar Man, Kellogg's, Chesterfield — and is widely credited as the originator of the American New Year Baby and of Santa's now-standard red suit.
