A print of an Apollo fresco in the tradition of the Roman wall paintings recovered from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. Apollo — god of music, prophecy, light, and the arts of healing — is rendered in the conventional Roman mode: youthful, long-haired, lyre at hand, the laurel crown of Delphi somewhere nearby.
Apollo was one of the most painted deities in Roman domestic art. He appears as musician, as healer, as the god of the Delphic oracle, and as the divine patron claimed by Augustus after the victory at Actium in 31 BC — after which his image proliferated in public and private Roman painting alike. The wall-painters of Campania rendered him in an easy, almost mannered Hellenistic grace, more lyrical than heroic.
The finest surviving Pompeiian Apollo frescoes hang today at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli. In print, the muted palette and the quick freehand line of the original wall-painter — ochres, earth reds, the signature Pompeii red — come forward as pure surface.
