A black and white print of Emperor Augustus, the first Roman emperor — born Gaius Octavius in 63 BC, adopted by Julius Caesar, and after his victory at Actium in 31 BC transformed from a triumphant general into the founder of the Principate. His reign lasted forty years and shaped the political architecture of the Roman Empire for centuries after.
The official portraiture of Augustus is one of the most deliberately constructed images in the history of Western art. Across the empire, sculptors followed a standardised type: the features always youthful, the hair carefully arranged, the face calm — regardless of the emperor's actual age when a given portrait was carved. The Augustus of Prima Porta, now in the Vatican Museums, is the most famous surviving example of the type.
