A black and white print of the interior of the Pantheon in Rome — a perfect sphere inscribed into a cylinder, lit by a single circular oculus at the apex of Hadrian's 43-metre dome. Seven niches around the drum hold altars and tombs; the floor, re-laid but faithful to the Roman original, still tilts slightly toward hidden drains that catch the rain that falls through the open eye of the building.

The Pantheon was built by the Emperor Hadrian between roughly 118 and 128 AD on the site of a Republican-era temple of Marcus Agrippa. Converted to a church in 609 AD, it has been in continuous religious use ever since; the tomb of Raphael, set into the left side of the drum, has been one of its pilgrimage points since the painter's death in 1520.

The interior is a lesson in Roman architectural geometry: the building's diameter (43.3 m) is exactly its height from floor to oculus, so the sphere of space inscribed inside it is a true sphere. Beneath the oculus, the coffered ceiling tightens into concentric rings as the dome rises. In black and white, the interplay of shadow and the shaft of sunlight from the oculus become the subject.
