A print of Hercules and the Lion — a third treatment of the hero wrestling the Nemean Lion in the first of his Twelve Labours.
The Nemean Lion was an enormous beast that had been ravaging the countryside around Nemea. Its hide was invulnerable to iron, bronze or stone, so Hercules could not kill it with any weapon. He ran it down into its cave, blocked one of the two entrances, went in after it, and strangled it with his bare hands. He skinned it using one of its own claws and wore the pelt for the rest of his life; the lion-skin became his defining attribute. Pindar, in the 5th century BC, already called this the "first and most famous" of the hero's feats; ancient coinage, ancient sculpture, Greek vase painting and Roman sarcophagi returned to it over and over.
