A print of a Hellenistic fragmentary head — the surviving face of a classical statue whose body is lost, of the kind produced in the late Greek workshops of the 4th to 1st centuries BC and copied extensively by Roman marble cutters.

Hellenistic sculpture is the period between Alexander's conquests and the consolidation of the Roman Empire — roughly 323 to 31 BC — and it is in many ways the technical high point of Greek figurative art. Expression became more legible (the furrowed brow of Laocoön, the anguished face of the Dying Gaul); realism extended to age and individual feature; and the portrait, as opposed to the generalised type, came into its own as a genre. Most of this sculpture survives through fragments, and the fragmentary head — severed from its body, isolated on a pedestal, taking a weight of attention out of all proportion to its size — has become the typical form in which the period is encountered in museums.

From the Renaissance onward the fragment has been a generative form for European sculpture rather than a diminished version of an ideal whole.
