A print of Johan Teyler's colour engraving of the Medici Vase — one of the Dutch printmaker's celebrated à la poupée plates, in which several colours are inked onto a single copperplate and pulled through the press in a single pass. Teyler invented the technique in the late 17th century.

The Medici Vase itself is a monumental Pentelic marble krater carved in Athens in the 1st century AD, now held in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Its continuous high-relief frieze is usually read as a scene from the Trojan War cycle — the prophetic seer Calchas foretelling the sacrifice of Iphigenia — though other readings have been proposed over the centuries. The vase was acquired by the Medici family in the 16th century for their Roman villa and moved to Florence in the 18th, where it has since been one of the most copied ornamental vases in European decorative art.

Johan Teyler (1648–1709) was a Dutch painter, engineer, and printmaker; his colour-plate experiments anticipated the decorative print culture of the 18th-century Grand Tour. Pair with the companion plates: Borghese Vase and Piranesi Vase.
