A print of Bertini's Adonis and Venus — a 19th century Italian reproductive engraving treating one of the classic tragic loves of Greco-Roman mythology, the goddess of love and the beautiful mortal hunter who dies in her arms.

The story, given its fullest telling in Ovid's Metamorphoses, is one of love and early death. Venus falls for Adonis, a hunter of extraordinary beauty; she warns him against the chase of strong game; he goes out anyway, is gored by a wild boar — sent, in some versions, by a jealous Mars — and dies as she arrives. From his blood springs the anemone flower. The subject was painted by Titian, by Rubens, by Poussin; Shakespeare turned it into a narrative poem; it was one of the reliable mythological subjects of European art from the Renaissance through the 19th century.

Reproductive engraving — line-engraved plates after celebrated paintings and sculptures — was the 19th century's primary way of disseminating great art to households that would never see the original.
