A print of Richard Roland Holst's The Archer — the Dutch Symbolist's figure of a bowman drawn in the flat, decorative idiom that defined his generation of Amsterdam printmakers at the turn of the 20th century.
The archer is one of the oldest mythological figures in the Greek and wider ancient repertoire — Apollo and Artemis both carry the bow, as does Heracles, Odysseus on his return to Ithaca, Eros with his shaft of love, and the centaur Chiron as tutor of heroes. The classical archer, stripped to a single taut pose, became a standard type in late-19th century Symbolist and Jugendstil print design — a way to treat the body as silhouette, the gesture as heraldry.
Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst (1868–1938) was a central figure of Dutch Symbolism and Jugendstil — a lithographer, stained-glass designer, muralist and teacher whose work shaped Dutch decorative art around 1900. His figure prints treat the body as pattern rather than as anatomy.
