A black and white print of the Dancing Faun, the small Hellenistic bronze found in 1830 in the atrium of the grandest private residence at Pompeii — the House of the Faun, which takes its modern name from this sculpture. Dated to the 2nd century BC, the bronze is now held at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli.
The figure is a satyr — faun in Latin — caught in mid-dance. His weight balances on the ball of one foot, his hips twist, his arms rise and fall in opposition. He is one of the finest surviving examples of small-scale Hellenistic bronzework and a study in the kind of sinuous, S-curved torsion that became the shorthand of the period.
In black and white, the patina of ancient bronze and the quiet tension of the pose come forward without the distraction of colour — the carving reads as line and form. The original was buried for seventeen centuries under the ash of Vesuvius; the fact that the bronze survived the eruption at all is part of why it is so loved.
