A tighter crop of the right hand of Michelangelo's David (1501–1504), reducing the composition to the single most-discussed detail of the sculpture. Where our first right-hand view shows the hand in relation to the hip, this one moves in closer still — the veins raised on the back of the hand, the soft depression at the base of the thumb, the stones held loosely in the fingers.

The right hand of the David is intentionally oversized. Michelangelo carved it this way as a reading of the biblical epithet manu fortis ("strong of hand") attached to the figure of David, and as a compositional response to the statue's original intended placement high on Florence Cathedral. When the finished statue was installed instead at ground level in the Piazza della Signoria in 1504, the disproportion became one of the work's most celebrated features.

In black and white, the Carrara marble's surface resolves to pure form — the carving reading with the clarity of drawing. Now in the Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence, the David is the defining sculpture of the High Renaissance.

Alternative angles of this statue: David (Right Hand 1), David (Left Hand), and David (Rear).
