A black and white print of the Gaddi Torso, a Hellenistic Greek marble fragment of the 2nd or 1st century BC, now held at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The torso takes its modern name from Cosimo Gaddi, the Florentine cardinal who owned it in the 17th century before it passed into the Medici collection.
Only the trunk survives — no head, no limbs below the thighs — and yet it is among the most studied ancient torsos in the Western canon. The musculature is carved with an attention to anatomical accuracy that is remarkable for its date. Michelangelo is recorded as having drawn from it, and echoes of the pose and proportions can be traced in his Sistine Chapel figures.
What remains, in the absence of a face or narrative, is pure form — the spiralling torsion of the spine, the fall of muscle across the ribs, the poise held in abstract. In black and white, that formal clarity is unadorned.
