A print of a Venus and Mars fresco in the tradition of the Roman wall paintings recovered from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. The lovers — Venus, the goddess of love, and Mars, the god of war — are one of the most-painted pairings in Roman domestic art, reclining together in the decorated reception rooms of well-appointed Campanian villas.

The affair of Venus and Mars is one of the most-told episodes of Greco-Roman myth, first sung in the Odyssey and endlessly retold in Ovid: a secret romance between the wife of Vulcan and the god of war, caught in a golden net, the scandal of Olympus. In Roman domestic painting it was read as a tableau of reconciled opposites — love and war, beauty and strength — and an appropriate emblem for the triclinium or bedchamber of a Roman villa.

The finest surviving examples of this subject hang today at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, the great state museum of the Bay of Naples excavations. In print, the muted ochres, reds and blacks of the Roman palette and the elegant freehand line of the original reception-room painter come forward.
