A print of John Singer Sargent's Tiepolo Ceiling — a watercolour study after the great Venetian ceiling painter by one of the finest watercolourists of the early 20th century, treating a fresco in the loose, luminous wash that defined Sargent's late work.

Giambattista Tiepolo (1696–1770) was the last great master of European fresco, a Venetian painter whose ceilings — at the Würzburg Residence, the Palazzo Labia, the Royal Palace in Madrid, and a dozen Venetian churches and palazzi — carried the Baroque tradition of trompe-l'œil sky-bursts and airborne mythological figures to its final, unsurpassed peak. Sargent, a lifelong Venetophile who studied there as a young man, returned to Tiepolo's frescoes repeatedly in his watercolours, drawn to the combination of freely rendered light and tightly controlled figure grouping.

John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was the defining portrait painter of the late-Victorian and Edwardian era and, in his later years, a restless and brilliant watercolourist. His travelling watercolours through Italy, Spain, the Alps and the Middle East are the most relaxed and painterly body of work of his career.
