A print of Johan Teyler's colour engraving of the Borghese Vase — one of the celebrated Dutch printmaker's experimental à la poupée plates, in which several colours are inked onto a single copperplate and pulled in one pass through the press. Teyler invented the technique in the late 17th century; the vase prints are among its most accomplished surviving examples.

The Borghese Vase itself is a monumental Pentelic marble krater carved in Athens in the 1st century BC, covered with a Dionysian relief of Bacchus, Ariadne and their retinue. It was unearthed in the 16th century from the ruins of the Gardens of Sallust in Rome, acquired by the Borghese family, and passed to the Louvre in 1808 when Napoleon bought the Borghese collection from his brother-in-law Prince Camillo. It has been one of the most-copied ornamental vases in European decorative art for four hundred years.

Johan Teyler (1648–1709) was a Dutch painter, engineer and fortification instructor who patented his colour-printing technique at the end of his life and used it to pull a series of highly decorative plates — flowers, birds, maps, antique vases. Pair with the companion plates: Medici Vase and Piranesi Vase.
