A black and white print of Bertel Thorvaldsen's Three Graces — the Danish sculptor's Neoclassical rendering of the triad of Charites from Greek mythology: Aglaea (splendour), Euphrosyne (mirth) and Thalia (good cheer), the daughters of Zeus who attended Aphrodite and personified the gifts of grace and beauty.

Thorvaldsen spent most of his career in Rome and was, after Canova, the foremost Neoclassical sculptor of the early 19th century. Where Canova favoured lyrical softness, Thorvaldsen pursued a cooler, more austere classicism — closer in spirit to the pared-back Greek canon than to the Hellenistic sensuality Canova drew on. The Three Graces sits in that lineage: three figures composed in calm rotational symmetry, arms gently linked, gaze turned inward rather than outward toward the viewer.

The marble is held today at the Thorvaldsens Museum in Copenhagen, the artist's purpose-built museum and tomb. In black and white, the measured geometry of the grouping reads most clearly — the play of three near-identical figures held in subtle differentiation.
