A black and white print of Pasquino, the Hellenistic Greek sculpture group that has stood at the corner of the Palazzo Braschi in Rome since the early 16th century. Much worn but still monumental, the group is generally identified as Menelaus supporting the body of Patroclus — the Spartan king bearing the fallen companion of Achilles from the battlefield at Troy.
The surviving marble is a 3rd-century BC Hellenistic work, possibly a copy of an earlier bronze. What makes Pasquino unique in the modern life of Rome, though, is not its date but its function: from the Renaissance onwards, it became the city's first and most famous statua parlante — "talking statue" — onto which anonymous Romans pinned satirical verses known as pasquinades. The tradition survives: the statue still sometimes wears a sheet of political commentary.
In black and white, the erosion of centuries — the weathered faces, the scarred marble surfaces — becomes part of the expressive register of the print.
