An alternative angle on the exterior of the Pantheon in Rome — the best-preserved building of Roman antiquity, built by the Emperor Hadrian between roughly 118 and 128 AD on the site of an earlier temple put up by Marcus Agrippa in 27 BC. This view shifts the composition toward the junction of the portico and the drum — the awkward, famously imperfect seam where the Greek temple front meets the uniquely Roman circular mass behind it.
The Pantheon is one of the few Roman buildings whose survival is unbroken: consecrated as a church in 609 AD under Pope Boniface IV, dedicated as Santa Maria ad Martyres, and in continuous use ever since. The original bronze doors still hang in the portico. The original coffered dome still holds 43 metres of unreinforced Roman concrete aloft. Raphael lies buried inside.
