An alternative angle on Guillaume Geefs' Le génie du mal (1848) — the Romantic marble Lucifer in Saint Paul's Cathedral in Liège, Belgium. The "Genius of Evil" sits chained on a rock, wings folded, brow heavy with thought; a broken crown and an apple lie at his feet.

Geefs carved the figure to replace his brother Joseph's earlier Lucifer of 1842, which the parish clergy had found too seductive for a cathedral pulpit. Guillaume responded with a Lucifer that is beautiful rather than demonic — a Byronic fallen angel, heir to Milton's Satan: intelligent, proud, defeated. The work has since become the most famous Romantic depiction of Lucifer in European sculpture.

This view shifts the emphasis onto the figure's wings and the coiled tension in the body, rather than the brooding stare of the front-facing angle. In black and white, the carving of individual feathers and the weight of the chained limbs read with the clarity of a studio photograph. Other angles of this sculpture: Lucifer of Liège.
