A print of a Hellenistic Aphrodite torso — the surviving fragmentary body of a classical statue of the Greek goddess of love and beauty, of the type produced in volume by Greek and Roman workshops from the 4th century BC onward.
Aphrodite sculpture has its foundational moment in Praxiteles' Aphrodite of Knidos, carved in the mid-4th century BC — the first large-scale female nude in Greek art, famous in antiquity, lost now except through Roman copies. After Praxiteles the type proliferated: the Aphrodite of Milos (Venus de Milo), the Capitoline Venus, the Medici Venus, the Crouching Venus, the Aphrodite of Arles. Most of them survive only as Roman marble copies, and most of those copies survive only as torsos — the arms, heads and legs broken off or lost over the two millennia since they were carved.
The fragment, rather than the reconstructed whole, has been the generative form for European sculpture from Michelangelo's admiration for the Belvedere Torso through Rodin.
