A black and white print of Trajan's Column in Rome, inaugurated in 113 AD to commemorate the Emperor Trajan's two wars against the Dacians. A single marble shaft rises 30 metres above the Forum of Trajan; around it winds a continuous spiral relief of over 150 scenes and 2,500 figures, telling the story of the campaigns from Roman embarkation to Dacian surrender.

The architect of the Forum and its column was Apollodorus of Damascus, the Greek-Syrian military engineer who also designed Trajan's bridge over the Danube and may have served in the Dacian campaigns himself. The relief is, among other things, a document — the most detailed surviving visual record of the Roman imperial army in action: its river crossings, its fortifications, its supply trains, its siege equipment.

The column has stood in place, intact, for nearly two thousand years. A statue of Trajan originally crowned it; since 1587, the figure at the top has been a bronze of Saint Peter, placed by Pope Sixtus V. In black and white, the texture of the relief and the slow vertical spiral of narrative come forward without the distraction of modern Rome around it.
