A black and white print of the cupola of the Pantheon in Rome — the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world, and for nearly 1,300 years the largest dome of any kind built by human hands. Five tiers of coffered squares rise toward the circular oculus, an 8.9-metre opening to the sky that is the building's only natural light source.

The Pantheon was built by the Emperor Hadrian between roughly 118 and 128 AD on the site of an earlier temple erected by Marcus Agrippa in 27 BC. The inscription on the pediment — M·AGRIPPA·L·F·COS·TERTIVM·FECIT — still credits the original patron, Hadrian's unusual modesty preserved in stone. The building survives because Pope Boniface IV converted it to a church in 609 AD, dedicated as Santa Maria ad Martyres; continuous consecration saved it from the stone-robbing that destroyed most of the other great imperial buildings.

The dome's interior is a geometric marvel: its diameter (43.3 metres) exactly matches the height from the floor to the oculus, so that a perfect sphere can be inscribed inside the space. In black and white, the coffering resolves into pure geometry — five rings of squares receding into the bright circular eye of the oculus.
