A black and white print of the Library of Celsus at Ephesus, in western Anatolia — the reconstructed facade of one of the great libraries of the Roman world, built around 117 AD by Tiberius Julius Aquila in memory of his father, Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, a Roman senator and former proconsul of Asia.

The library was, in its day, the third-largest collection of books in the ancient world — after the great libraries of Alexandria and Pergamum — and held around 12,000 scrolls in niches built into the inner walls. Celsus himself was entombed in a sarcophagus beneath the library floor, an unusual honour granted because the building was as much a mausoleum as a public institution.

The interior was destroyed by earthquake in the third century and the facade itself toppled in the tenth; what stands today is a 1970s reconstruction (anastylosis) of the original facade using the original stones recovered in situ. The four niche statues personify Celsus' virtues — Sophia (wisdom), Episteme (knowledge), Ennoia (intelligence) and Arete (excellence). In black and white, the geometry of the two-storey facade and the depth of the carved niches come forward with the clarity of an architect's drawing.
